Open Color palette
Open Color is an older open-source scheme, and a smaller one:
13 families of 10 shades, 130 colors. It was designed with the shades tuned by hand rather than
generated from a formula, which shows in the mid range — Open Color’s blue-5 and cyan-5 read as
clearly distinct hues where a generated scale tends to blur them.
OpenColorPalette mirrors TailwindPalette method for method. The shades are numbered 0 to 9, mapped
onto the same Shade enum, so Shade.S50 is step 0 and Shade.S900 is step 9. Shade.S950 has no
Open Color counterpart and returns null from getOpenColorStep().
OpenColorPalette.BLUE.shade(Shade.S500).getHexCode(); // 339af0OpenColorPalette.BLUE.shade(5); // same, by open color stepOpenColorPalette.BLUE.base(); // blue-5OpenColorPalette.BLUE.allShades(); // 10, light to dark
OpenColorShade shade = OpenColorPalette.TEAL.shade(6);shade.getValue(); // teal-6shade.getHexCodeWithLeadingHash(); // #12b886shade.getHslColor().getHslCode();shade.isBlackContrastingColor2(); // true → black textBecause both palettes implement ColorCode, a nearest-color lookup can span them:
List<ColorCode> pool = new ArrayList<>();pool.addAll(TailwindPalette.all());pool.addAll(OpenColorPalette.all());
ColorCode closest = ColorCode.getNearest(pool, "#3b82f6");Across the whole palette
Section titled “Across the whole palette”List<OpenColorShade> all = OpenColorPalette.all(); // 130OpenColorShade nearest = OpenColorPalette.getNearest("#3b82f6"); // indigo-5OpenColorShade accent = OpenColorPalette.randomShade(Shade.mids());The colors
Section titled “The colors”Labels are drawn with isBlackContrastingColor2().
